The Vedic day: why it starts at sunrise, not midnight

In the panchang tradition the day begins when the sun rises. What that changes for the weekday, the hours and the night.

The Vedic day begins at sunrise and ends at the next sunrise. A wall calendar turns the date at midnight, a moment no one can see from a window. The panchang, the traditional Hindu almanac, starts the day at a moment anyone can see: the sun coming up over the horizon. That one choice shapes how the weekday is counted, how the day and the night are divided, and why the same date carries different hours in different cities.

Why the Vedic day begins at sunrise

In the panchang tradition the weekday is called the vara. It is one of the almanac's five limbs, alongside the tithi (the lunar day), the nakshatra (one of 27 star divisions along the Moon's path), the yoga (a measure taken from the Sun and Moon together) and the karana (half a lunar day). Each vara is named for a graha, the Sanskrit word for the planets of traditional astronomy. Seven of them give the week its days: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

The tradition counts the day from sunrise because its divisions of time are measured from the sun. Midnight is a convention of the civil clock. Sunrise is an event in the sky, and it arrives at a slightly different moment in every place and on every morning.

So a Vedic day is not a fixed block of 24 clock hours. It is one full turn of light and dark: a day half from sunrise to sunset, then a night half from sunset to the next sunrise. Most of the familiar divisions are fractions of a half, not fixed numbers of minutes.

  • Choghadiya: each half is split into eight equal parts, each with a traditional name such as Amrit (nectar), Shubh (good) or Labh (gain). There is a fuller guide in What is choghadiya?
  • Hora: each half is split into twelve planetary hours, described below.
  • Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika: three classical daytime portions, each one of eight equal parts of daylight, chosen by weekday. They have their own guide.
  • Abhijit muhurta: a muhurta is one of the thirty traditional parts of a full day and night. Abhijit is the eighth of fifteen equal parts of daylight, around local noon.

What a sunrise-to-sunrise day means in practice

Take an example. From sunrise on Tuesday until sunrise on Wednesday, the vara is Tuesday. An hour before dawn, which the wall calendar already calls Wednesday, is still part of Tuesday's Vedic day. Wednesday's vara begins only when the sun rises.

  • Late evenings and early mornings are one stretch. The hours after sunset and before dawn form the night half of the same day. Nothing resets at midnight.
  • A pre-dawn hour takes the previous weekday. For a traditional reading in the small hours, look under the vara that began at the previous sunrise, not the date on your phone.
  • A Vedic day is rarely exactly 24 clock hours. Sunrise shifts a little each morning as the seasons turn, so one sunrise to the next is seldom exactly 24 hours. Where clocks change for daylight saving, the clock time of sunrise jumps by about an hour on the change date.
  • The quiet stretch before dawn closes the day. Brahma muhurta, the traditional pre-dawn stretch valued for prayer and study, is commonly counted from 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise. It sits at the very end of the Vedic day.

Hora: the planetary hours counted from sunrise

A hora is a planetary hour, a stretch of the day assigned to one of the seven grahas. The horas follow a fixed traditional order that repeats without a break: Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, then the Sun again. The first hora of each Vedic day belongs to the graha that names the weekday, so the day's own lord opens it at sunrise.

There are 24 horas in each Vedic day: twelve in the day half and twelve in the night half. The sequence does not restart at sunset. On a Sunday, for example, the Sun opens the day, the twelfth hora of daylight belongs to Saturn, and the night half begins with Jupiter. After all 24, the next hora in the order is the Moon, the lord of Monday. This is the traditional explanation for the order of the weekdays: each new sunrise opens with the next weekday's lord.

How long is a hora? In the convention described here, which is also the one Sumuhurta's engine uses, a hora is not a fixed 60-minute hour. Each day hora is one twelfth of the time from sunrise to sunset, and each night hora is one twelfth of the time from sunset to the next sunrise. The two lengths match only when day and night are equal.

An example with round numbers: if daylight lasts 14 hours, each day hora is 70 minutes long, and the 10-hour night gives night horas of 50 minutes each. With 12 hours of each, every hora is 60 minutes.

Why the hours change with the season and the city

Because most divisions are fractions of a half, their lengths follow the sun. In summer the day half is long, so each daytime part stretches and each night part shrinks. In winter the reverse happens. Near the equator the two halves stay close to twelve hours each all year. Farther from the equator the swing grows, and the two hemispheres move in opposite directions.

Latitude mostly sets how long the day half lasts. Longitude mostly sets when the sun reaches you: inside one time zone, places farther east generally see the sun rise earlier by the clock. Kolkata and Mumbai share Indian Standard Time, yet on that same date the sun rose in Kolkata 66 minutes earlier by the clock than in Mumbai.

Every boundary in the day moves with the sunrise. That is why a panchang names its place as well as its date, and why a table printed for one city fits another only loosely. When you travel, your day begins at your new sunrise.

How Sumuhurta follows the Vedic day

Sumuhurta, an iPhone app, is built on this sunrise-to-sunrise day. Its unit of calculation is one Vedic day, and the weekday changes at sunrise, so an hour before dawn belongs to the cycle that began at the previous sunrise.

On screen, the whole cycle sits on one line, from sunrise on the left to the next sunrise on the right. A quiet notch marks where the sun sets, and the ticks dim after dark, so the night half reads as part of the same day rather than as empty space. Your windows glow on that line, labelled with their start times, and a small dot marks now. Dragging sideways moves through the whole cycle, and the view eases back to now when you let go. The screen is the sky shows how it looks.

  • Each cycle holds one to three personal windows, by day or by night, and an evening window belongs to the same cycle as a morning one. When the next window comes after sunset, the screen introduces it as Tonight.
  • No window crosses sunrise or sunset. The calculation splits the cycle at both points, so every window sits wholly in the day half or the night half.
  • Each window carries a quiet attribution, such as Jupiter hora · Amrit, naming the hora and the choghadiya at the middle of the window.

The windows also keep to one bounded rule. Kaal, Rog and Udveg are three of the seven choghadiya names, the ones the tradition sets aside when choosing a time to begin something:

Every personal window Sumuhurta surfaces is calculated to avoid Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika, and the Kaal, Rog and Udveg choghadiya periods.

That rule is deliberately narrow. The app does not show tables of those periods and does not claim to be a complete muhurta assessment. It keeps its selected windows and leaves the rest of the line as open sky.

By default the app reads the day for the birth place you chose at setup. If you allow location access, it takes a coarse position, rounded to about a kilometre, when you open the app. When your phone is more than about 50 km from that place, it quietly recomputes the whole cycle for where you are, with no dialog. It also recomputes at each sunrise, on a time zone change and when the app comes to the foreground. Widgets follow once you open the app at the new place, and every calculation stays on your phone.

Common questions

Does the weekday change at midnight in the panchang?

No. In the panchang tradition the vara changes at sunrise. The hours between midnight and dawn belong to the vara that began at the previous sunrise.

Is a hora always 60 minutes long?

Not in the convention described here. A day hora is one twelfth of the daylight and a night hora is one twelfth of the night, so both are close to 60 minutes only when day and night are nearly equal, as near the equator or around the equinoxes.

Why does a panchang for another city show different hours?

Each city has its own sunrise and sunset. Longitude shifts when the sun rises by the clock, and latitude changes how long the day lasts, so every boundary counted from sunrise moves with them.

Does the Vedic day tell the future?

No. It is a traditional way of counting and dividing time, and many people use it as a rhythm for choosing when to begin things. It is tradition and guidance, and it makes no claim about outcomes.
