Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika: the hours tradition sets aside
Three short parts of every day that tradition leaves aside for new beginnings, and how each one is worked out.
Rahu Kaal is a short stretch of daylight, one eighth of the time from sunrise to sunset, that comes around on every day of the week. In the panchang tradition (the panchang is the Hindu almanac that orders each day by the sun and the moon), it is a time set aside rather than chosen for starting something new. Two companions sit beside it, Yamaganda and Gulika, and together they are the periods people most often look up before a journey, a signing or a family ceremony.
None of the three is a fixed clock time. Each is one part of the daytime, counted from your own sunrise to your own sunset, and the day of the week decides which part. This guide covers what each period is, how to work it out, why the times move, and what tradition does with them.
What Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika are
All three names describe time. Kaal comes from the Sanskrit kala, which means time, so Rahu Kaal is the time of Rahu. South Indian calendars often write the three as Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam and Gulikai Kalam, where kalam is the same word as kaal.
Rahu Kaal is named for Rahu, one of the nine grahas, the celestial bodies and points that Jyotish (Vedic astrology) reads. Rahu is not a physical body. Tradition calls it a shadow graha, and in astronomy it is the north node of the Moon, the point where the Moon's path crosses the sun's apparent path heading north. Rahu Kaal is the most widely known of the three, and its observance is especially strong in South India.
Yamaganda is named for Yama, who in the tradition is also called Dharmaraja, the keeper of dharma, the moral order. It is treated much like Rahu Kaal, as a part of the day that tradition does not choose for beginnings.
Gulika, also called Gulika Kaal, is named for Gulika, an upagraha: a secondary, calculated point rather than a planet. Tradition links it to Saturn, known in Jyotish as Shani.
How the three periods are calculated
The method is the same for all three. Take the daytime, from sunrise to sunset, and divide it into eight equal parts, numbered 1 to 8 from sunrise. Each period fills exactly one part, and the day of the week, called the vara in a panchang, decides which one.
Some traditions also count night versions across the hours from sunset to the next sunrise. This guide covers the daytime periods, which are the ones most people mean and the ones Sumuhurta calculates.

A few patterns help. On any one day the three periods fall in three different parts, so they take up three parts of eight and leave five open. Gulika steps back one part each day, from 7 on Sunday to 1 on Saturday. Yamaganda steps back from 5 on Sunday to 1 on Thursday, then moves to 7 on Friday and 6 on Saturday. Rahu Kaal never falls in the first part.
For Rahu Kaal, a common English memory aid runs: "Mother Saw Father Wearing The Turban Suitably". The initials stand for Monday, Saturday, Friday, Wednesday, Thursday, Tuesday and Sunday, which hold Rahu Kaal in parts 2 through 8, in that order.
A worked example
These round numbers are an illustration, not the times for any real place.
- Find sunrise and sunset. In this example, sunrise is at 6:00am and sunset at 6:00pm.
- Work out the daylight: 12 hours, or 720 minutes.
- Divide by eight: each part is 90 minutes.
- Look up the weekday. Say it is a Monday: Rahu Kaal is part 2, Yamaganda part 4 and Gulika part 6.
- Count forward from sunrise. A period in part n begins once n minus 1 parts have passed and ends once n parts have passed.
Rahu Kaal on this example Monday begins one part, 90 minutes, after sunrise and ends two parts, 180 minutes, after sunrise. By the same steps, Yamaganda fills the fourth part, from 270 to 360 minutes after sunrise, and Gulika the sixth, from 450 to 540 minutes after sunrise.
Why the times change from place to place
Only two things set these periods: the weekday, and the real sunrise and sunset where you are. The weekday table never changes, but sunrise and sunset depend on latitude, on where you sit within your time zone, and on the season. The length of each part changes with them. Keep the same Monday and change only the example day:
- On an example winter day with sunrise at 7:00am and sunset at 5:00pm, each part lasts 75 minutes, so Rahu Kaal runs from 75 to 150 minutes after sunrise.
- On an example summer day with sunrise at 5:30am and sunset at 7:30pm, each part lasts 105 minutes, so Rahu Kaal runs from 105 to 210 minutes after sunrise.
Real days vary the same way. On one Saturday in August 2026, a single part of daylight lasted about 95 minutes in Bengaluru, about 113 minutes in London and about 80 minutes in Sydney, where it was winter.
This is why printed charts that give Rahu Kaal as one fixed time per weekday are only a rough guide. They usually assume sunrise and sunset at six, like the first example, so their times drift as soon as your sunrise moves. Daylight saving time moves the clock too. Even two careful panchangs can differ by a minute or two, because each calculates sunrise and sunset in its own way. What tradition does with these periods
In tradition, these periods are about beginnings. People leave them aside when choosing a moment to start something: setting out on a journey, opening a shop, signing an agreement, entering a new home, or beginning a ceremony. This belongs to muhurta, the practice of choosing a well-suited moment for an undertaking, and Rahu Kaal is its most familiar everyday rule.
Tradition does not ask you to stop what is already under way. Work that began earlier carries on, and ordinary life continues. The custom is simply to let a new start wait for another part of the day, and most of the daylight stays open. In some temples and households in South India, Rahu Kaal even has its own place as a customary time for prayers to the goddess Durga.
Families give the three different weight. Rahu Kaal is usually observed most closely, and Yamaganda in much the same way. Customs around Gulika vary more, and some families treat it differently from the other two. Where practice differs, a full panchang for your region or a qualified practitioner is the right guide.
None of this is a forecast. A panchang describes the shape of a day as tradition sees it, not what will happen in it. These periods also sit alongside choghadiya, the traditional division of the day and of the night into eight parts each.
